FAQ: Minor Behaviour Investigations

When is a behavioural investigation into your child appropriate, and how do we safeguard the child's wellbeing?

When is a behavioural investigation into my child appropriate?

A behavioural investigation can be appropriate when there are concerns about your child's circle of friends, unexplained behaviour, suspected grooming or criminal influence, or when you as a parent feel you've lost oversight. We assess together with you whether an investigation is proportionate and which approach best fits the situation.

How do you safeguard my child's wellbeing during the investigation?

The child's interests and wellbeing always come first. Our investigators work discreetly and with restraint, and we discuss with you beforehand which approach fits your child's age and vulnerability.

As a parent, am I allowed to have my minor child followed or investigated?

As a parent or guardian you have a legitimate interest in your child's safety, but even then the investigation must be proportionate and take the child's own interests into account as much as possible. We assess this with you beforehand.

What are signs my child may be a victim of grooming or criminal exploitation?

Signs include sudden secrecy around a phone or a new 'friend', unexplained gifts or money, changed behaviour towards school or family, and withdrawal from their usual circle of friends. One sign is rarely conclusive on its own, but a combination is reason for extra attention.

Do you work with schools, youth services or police during a behavioural investigation?

We can coordinate with relevant organisations if desired, but always in consultation with you and with care for your child's privacy. In case of immediate danger, we always refer first to the police or child safety services.
