As a parent, you often feel it before you can name it: something about your child is different. The signs below aren't proof of a problem, but they are reason to stay alert.
1. Sudden change in friend group
Friendships change: that's part of growing up. Pay attention when it happens abruptly, is accompanied by secrecy, or coincides with other behavioural changes.
2. Declining school performance
A drop in grades or motivation can point to stress, bullying, peer pressure or other underlying issues.
3. Secrecy around phone and social media
A phone that's suddenly always locked or never visible is, on its own, normal for a teenager, but combined with other signs, it can point to something being hidden.
4. Unexplained money or possessions
New belongings or money with an unclear origin deserve a conversation, and sometimes more than that.
5. Changed sleep or eating patterns
Sleep problems or changed eating behaviour are often signs of underlying stress or anxiety.
6. Increased aggression or withdrawal
Both noticeably aggressive and noticeably withdrawn behaviour can point to something your child isn't sharing, or doesn't feel able to.
7. Physical signs without a clear explanation
Injuries, fatigue or other physical signs that can't be logically explained deserve serious attention. Discuss this with a doctor if needed.
What can you do?
It starts with having the conversation. If that doesn't bring clarity and the concern persists, a discreet, proportionate behavioural investigation can help form a realistic picture, so you can act thoughtfully, in your child's best interest.
