From likes to lies: how online traces reveal truth

Open source research, also known as OSINT (Open Source Intelligence), is the collection and analysis of freely accessible digital information. Think of public profiles on social media, online reviews, websites, advertisements, photos and forums. Modern technology allows us to make connections hidden to the naked eye.

We use AI tools to efficiently and purposefully search digital data. This helps us, for example, spot behavioral or pattern anomalies, detect activity at specific times, or uncover subtle connections in networks.

A client approached us because he had doubts about the secondary income of an employee whose contract did not allow him to engage in commercial activities. OSINT investigation revealed that the employee was active under his own name on multiple job platforms and received positive reviews there for recent assignments. We also found photos on social media showing him doing work in work clothes from a competing company.

This information was combined with additional observations and resulted in a strongly supported file that allowed the client to take follow-up steps.

Digital traces often tell more than conversations, statements or documents. At Santos Criminal Investigation Bureau, we combine OSINT with physical observation and tactical interview techniques. This creates a complete picture that can serve as the basis for legal or organizational measures.

Be it:

Internal fraud

Conflict of interest

Violation of competition or ancillary employment agreements.

Integrity investigation

Pre-employment screening

...We help companies get a handle on situations where facts matter.

Our research takes place within the legal framework of the AVG. Transparency, diligence and proportionality are paramount to us - also in the digital domain.
