What does a private investigator do in practice?

An insight into the work of Santos Recherchebureau

Sometimes we get the question:
"What does a private investigator really do all day?"

The honest answer? No week is the same.

Last week was a good example of that. Without going into names or reducible details, discretion always remains number one, this week gives a realistic glimpse into how broad the work of our detectives is.

What does a private investigator do in practice?

A private investigator, detective or detective agency, is called in when facts are needed. For example, in cases of suspected fraud, business conflicts, integrity issues or disputes in private life.

The work consists of observation, digital research (OSINT), fact-finding and professional, objective
reporting. Not based on assumptions, but on what is actually observed.

Last week at Santos Criminal Investigation Bureau

Last week, our investigators worked on a variety of cases for
companies, private clients and fellow detective agencies.

For example, we conducted an observation on behalf of a company in which a person was maintaining contact with third parties outside
agreements. The observation started at the home and continued to
a hotel. The assignment was entirely focused on careful fact-finding.

In addition, we were involved in a business dispute between former associates. One party
had taken large clients and transferred them to another organization. In this case, we provided
observation and objective recording of relevant facts.

Security driving was also performed for a high-profile client. Here planning,
discretion and security come together. This type of work requires a clear security mindset, where observation and
risk assessment are central.

Another part of the week consisted of participating in a training focused on unobtrusive
operations in the city
. Together with a trainer and experienced professionals, training was practiced in an environment
in which "opposing forces" were also present. This training took place with former detectives, defense personnel and other specialists and contributes to knowledge sharing and keeping skills sharp within the profession.

In addition, several private investigations were ongoing, including a complex
inheritance and shareholder conflict. Two brothers, inherited shares and escalating tensions,
combined with a sick call where strategic behavior was suspected. Our role: to gather facts and report objectively.

We also worked on an investigation into possible alimony fraud, where the actual
situation is believed to be different from what is officially reported.

Finally, we gathered evidence in a suspected content theft case where a training agency
may have structurally taken content from a competitor. Fact gathering, substantiation and documentation were key here.

Engineering, OSINT and support

In addition to the operational detective work, a lot of technical and support work played out last week.

For example, a colleague was hired to place a camera bike in the middle of Amsterdam. There
was a deliberate choice between a camera bike and a camera scooter. Each solution has its own advantages, depending on location, risk and purpose of observation.

In addition, we conducted several OSINT surveys to sharpen information positions for clients
.

Our camera cars and mobile observation devices were also deployed for various routes. That
means not only placing and monitoring, but also securing, reading, analyzing and processing images into reports.

Increasingly, we are being used for this purpose not only by direct clients, but also by
fellow detective agencies who know how to find us to deploy camera cars and mobile
observation devices.

The core of the detective profession

And that gets to the heart of the profession.

Detective work is rarely about "getting exciting.
It's about keeping calm, looking sharp, gathering facts and reporting professionally.

The truth is often in small details.
In what does happen, and sometimes precisely in what does not happen.

A beautiful profession.
Intense at times.
But always substantively interesting.
